伝説と伝承
今日はエイプリル・フールだが、私は君たちを相手にユーモアのセンスを試さず(君たちは実際十分にほぐれている観客だ)、スコット・カーツと彼のウェブ・コミック『Table Titans』で君たちに楽しんでもらうことにした。よく知らない人に説明すると、『Table Titans』はスコット・カーツによって描かれているウェブ連載の物語だ。このコミックは3人組が世界一伝説的なD&Dのグループでになるためにさまざまなクエストに挑む冒険を虚実交えて描いている。『Mines of Madness』はグループがプレイした冒険から創作されてスコットのPvPonline.comで最初に公開された(そして現在まで)。私たちがその再話を決めたのは、多くの人たちか知る強い物語性があるからだ。スコットは『Mines of Madness』を作成するためにクリス・パーキンスと協力した。PAX Eastで行なわれたDM's Challengeの参加者にはこの鉱山へ潜入する機会があったし、君は今もそれを行なえる。今日これから、そのアドベンチャーはダウンロード可能なプレイテスト・パックの中に入っておりD&D Nextのルールでプレイできるのだ。

プレイの級
プレイの級はかなりの長期にわたってD&Dの一部だった概念だ。それらはいくつかの版で、キャラクター・レベル間を明確に区切っていた。ベーシックD&Dはそれ自体をベーシック、エキスパート、マスター、そしてイモータル・セットに分けられ、ゲームの焦点もそれぞれダンジョンから荒野、領地経営、不死性の探求、そして宇宙的大冒険へと移されていく。第4版の場合、私たちは英雄級、伝説級、そして神話級に分類し、ベーシックD&Dにも似た方法によって冒険の影響や舞台の焦点をそれぞれ異なったところへ移していった。
他の版ではよりゆるやかにプレイは変化していく。たとえば、第3版では多くのグループが、生き残るために必要な能力のなかでもセーヴィング・スローの重要性が増し、術者の力が他の仲間より抜きんでてくる10レベル前後で別のゲームになったことを感じるだろう。
私たちはD&D Nextのために、級やそれがゲームの中でどんな意味を持っているのか何度か議論した。私は級がキャンペーンのためにDMが選択するその他のオプションと同じようにある――君にどんなゲームになるのかを示して心構えをさせる要素――べきだと感じている。キャラクターの力が成長することと連動させて焦点を動かせるため、級は私たちがゲームを準備することにも役立ちうる。ここでは私が各級をどうみているか紹介しよう。こうした級の構造は構造上の変化をかなり含むが、それはゲームの基本的な内容に干渉するものではないと覚えておいてほしい。
修行級:君たちがこれまでゲームを見てきたなかでもっとも大きな変更がこれだ。D&D Nextては1レベル・キャラクターから3レベル・キャラクターへ成長する間、すべてのクラスはこの新しい2レベルでキャラクターは完全な能力へと徐々に成長していくことになる。
すべてがこの法則の通りに動くわけではない。たとえばウィザードの呪文は現在のルール通りに成長するが、君は1レベルでひとつの初級呪文、2レベルで追加のひとつ、そしてもうひとつを3レベルで得る。3レベルになるまで専門系統を得ないため、君はまだ本当の意味で魔法の基礎を修め専門化してはいないと感じるだろう。
ゲーム・デザインの観点から見れば、これはより広いレベルにクラス特徴を分散させられることになる。初心者にはゲームを始めるにあたってより簡単にできるひとときがあり、ノン・プレイヤー・キャラクターはより簡単に扱え、そしてより簡単で速いゲームのためのキャラクター作成ができる。さらに、より強いキャラクターで始めたいグループは3レベルから始めることができる。ルールには特別なオプションとしてそれを含めている。
物語の中においても、キャラクターは(級の名が示すように)修行の身だ。彼らはまさに歩み始めたばかりで、クラス特徴の基本的なものを学んでいく。キャラクターの成長はかなり速いものになる。たとえば、『Keep on the Borderlands』で君が行なう最初の冒険は城塞の南にある森で失踪したエルフの安否を確認するものかもしれない。およそ2時間のプレイで、君は放浪するリザードフォークの部族と遭遇し、蜘蛛の巣で戦い、エルフを救助し、そして城塞へと帰還する。これだけで2レベルへ成長できる。3レベルまでに君は約2～4時間プレイし、盗賊団を追いかけて倒すなどのより大きな危険に挑戦しなければならない。
この考えは実際に運用する上で、最初のセッションでキャラクターの作成と2レベルまでの成長をプレイし、2度目のセッションで3レベルになろうということだ。もちろん、レベル上昇の具合を変化させることはどの級でもちょっとした変更で大丈夫だ。1レベルの仲間たちでより長くやりたかったり成長速度を上げたいグループには、それぞれのオプションがある。
冒険者級:修行級が君たちの冒険物語の序章とするなら、冒険者級は君たちのキャラクターが紡ぐ物語の中心になる。3レベルになったとき、君たちは冒険者としての実力を証明してより大きな挑戦への準備ができる。たとえば『Caves of Chaos』のようなダンジョンへの長い旅ができるようになる。修行級のキャラクターからは文明の地から離れたモンスターの巣へ挑むための柔軟性も耐久力も欠けている。冒険者級のキャラクターは幅広い能力を持ち、さらに彼らを個性化する独特な力を伸ばし始めるため、より可能性が広がる。
システム面での話をすれば、この級ではよりカスタマイズ性と選択肢が増える。専門分野はこのとき初めてプレイへ導入され、ウィザードの専門分野やローグの悪巧みなどを選べるようにもなる。修行級のキャラクターは冒険者級と比べればより道なりに成長する。
物語面では、冒険者級のキャラクターは有名人になる。冒険者級のキャラクターが町へやって来れば、そのキャラクターがまとう印象的な輝きを放つ古代の魔法がかかったプレート・メイルやその評判により、人々から注目される。
冒険者級は私たちが標準的なD&Dの経験だととらえているもののほとんどを提供する。多くの経験豊富なグループは最初から冒険者級を始めるだろうし、そうしたキャラクターが修行級の冒険で何をしてきたか設定できる物語のオプション(ランダム表と他のアイデアを想起させるもの)を含んだルールも準備する。
冒険者級は3レベルから15レベルにおよぶ。君たちはこの級であらゆるセッションが体験できるだろう。

16～20レベルが偉業級となり、キャラクターはおよそ3セッション毎にレベルを上昇させる。冒険者級と同様、この級から始めるための明確なルールとガイドラインが準備されるだろう。
