『PHB』の種族ひとつにスポットを当てて設定や強化データを解説したシリーズで、第一弾のこれは書名通りドラゴンボーンについての本ですぅ。
とりあえず最初に特筆すべきは、原書サプリへのとばぐちとして丁度いい32ページという分量とAmazon.co.jpでは1000円以下(2010年5月現在)という価格ですぅ。懐への負担も少なく、どれほどの英語が使われているのか判断するにはいい材料になると思いますぅ。
中身の方はドラゴンボーンが主人公の短編小説から始まり、イオによる種族の創造神話やドラゴンボーンの帝国、アルコシア(Arkhosia)の物語といったところで種族の概説がなされてますぅ。
創造神話はドラゴンになれなかった魂がドラゴンボーンとなった。プライモーディアルに殺害されたイオ(この時にイオがバハムートとティアマトに分離した)の血から誕生した。ドラゴンボーンが創造され戦争の道具としてドラゴンが創造された。という三論を併記し、彼らは創造神としてイオを重視していることを強調して「イオが死ななければ我らは中庸でいられた」、「我らに葛藤無し。バハムートとティアマト――汝どちらの御前に立つか。唯一の過ちとするは選択の放棄」という格言も引き、明確な決断を尊ぶドラゴンボーンの精神性についても語ってますぅ。
アルコシアはネラス帝国の勃興よりはるか前に栄えた歴史上最後のドラゴンボーンによる帝国で、黄金の君(Golden One)と呼ばれるゴールド・ドラゴンが統治し、ティーフリングの国、ベイル・トゥラスと争って共倒れになった歴史を持ってますぅ。ただ、今でも多くのドラゴンボーンはいつか蘇るアルコシアの民を自認し、新しい黄金の君が帝国を復興させるまで自分たちの栄光が過去を超えることはないと考えているですぅ。
『Family and Clan』の項は、ドラゴンボーンがアルコシア以前から持っていて、アルコシア後も維持されたドラゴンに仕える一門(Clan)、その中でも血縁による一家(Family)という社会単位(これの発展形が都市国家であり、帝国の領邦。)が解説されてますぅ。これにともなって、名誉を汚された一門であるBesmirched Birthright、アルコシア以前からドラゴンに仕え続ける文明と切れたDragonbonded Clan、英雄の一族であるLaudable Legacy、ベイル・トゥラスとの戦争で奴隷にされた一門であるTurathi Slave Clan、という4つのドラゴンボーン専用“背景”が紹介されてるですぅ。
『Arcane Dragonborn』は秘術をパワー源とするクラスとドラゴンボーンの関係性の解説で、能力値に合わせたクラスと特徴の取り方を解説するかたわら、ドラゴンボーンにとってソーサラーの竜魔法は竜の血を呼び覚ます意味合いを持つという解説もあるですぅ。ここでの秘術“背景”は、ドラゴンボーンによくいる傭兵として秘術の腕を売るArcane Mercenary、竜の血が濃いDragon-Blooded Spellcaster、ドラゴンから魔法を習ったDragon-Bound Arcanist、アルコシアから続く一子相伝の秘術を継ぐStudent of the Ninefold Pathの4つですぅ。伝説の道は、ドラゴン・ブレスに装具の効果を適用したり、ドラゴン・ブレスで選んだキーワードの攻撃パワーを取得できるNinefold Masterが追加されてますぅ。
『Divine Dragonborn』も前項と同じく信仰パワー源のおすすめクラスと、バハムートを規範とする正義の戦士Champion of Bahamut、型破りな信仰を持つDragonborn Iconoclast、ティアマトの力を使う女神その人への叛逆者Reluctant Pawn of Tiamat、イオの力を体に宿したShard of Io、という“背景”4つが紹介されてますぅ。伝説の道はPlatinum Wingsで遭遇終了まで飛行移動速度8を得たり、Misty Breathで状態異常を3つ乗せたりするバハムート信者用のPlatinum Templarですぅ。
『Martial Dragonborn』では武勇パワー源のドラゴンボーンが斧類や重刀剣類を好み、ローグは少なめと解説されてますぅ。“背景”は、厳しい修行こそを生き甲斐とするDisciplined Soldier、闘奴として生きてきたExotic Gladiator、命を賭けた戦いを愉しむFervent Commander、荒野を棲み処とするWilderness Lonerの4つ、伝説の道はブレスで選んだキーワードを武器攻撃に付与したり、挟撃されたら1マスシフトしてドラゴン・ブレスを使うDraconic Sidestepといったパワーを持つHonorable Bladeですぅ。
『Primal Dragonborn』は原始パワー源のドラゴンボーンはやはりバーバリアンが多いけれど、文明化された土地に住むアルコシア以前の信仰に基づく戦闘技術を伝える一派もいるというあたりが特徴的ですぅ。“背景”はエラティス教団に弾圧されて地下に潜った古代アルコシアの末裔Arkosian Totem Rager、憤怒を秘めたスピリット・ドレイクの申し子Chosen of the Spirit Drake、ドラゴンを祖霊として彼に仕えるDargon Totem Clan、過酷な環境で暮らしてきたSandstorm Callerの4つ、伝説の道は[電撃]のドラゴン・ブレス持ち専用で[電撃]や[雷鳴]に特化したStorm Dragonですぅ。
追加特技はすべての前提条件にドラゴンボーンがついた非常に解りやすい構成で、『PHB2』までのクラス特徴に絡むもの、ドラゴン・ブレス絡みが主ですぅ。目を引くところでは、敵のhpを0にした時回復力を使える《Glorious Victory》(英雄級)、ドラゴン・ブレスの能力値を任意のものに変更する《Powerful Breath》(英雄級)、ドラゴン・ブレスと同じキーワードを持つ一日毎[原始]攻撃パワーを使ったらドラゴン・ブレスが未使用になる《Spirit Breath》(伝説級)、雑魚以外の敵をhp0にしたらドラゴン・ブレスが未使用になる《Draconic Triumph》(神話級)あたりですぅ。特に後のふたつはドラゴン・ブレスに嫌な状態やペナルティを与える特技が増えたので、それらを重ねた上で持つと嫌な感じになりそうですぅ。
追加の装備品はすべて魔法のアイテムで、クリティカルで継続ダメージを与えるBloodletting Weapon(レベル14+、重刀剣類)、〈威圧〉に強化ボーナスをつけるFrightful Weapon(レベル2+、アックス類)、一日毎パワーで【筋】+強化ボーナスの追加ダメージを与えるGutting Weapon(レベル3+、軽刀剣類)、一日毎パワーで押しやりを1マス増やすKnockback Weapon(レベル4+、ハンマー類、メイス類)、遭遇毎パワーで戦術的優位を取りにいけるWhirlwind Weapon(レベル3+、スピア類、長柄武器類)、アルコシアの精鋭部隊が持っていたSilver Dragon Regaliaというアイテム・セットとなってるですぅ。
最後の『Dragonborn Quest』では、プレイヤーからDMに提案する際参考にできるドラゴンボーンらしさを表現するクエストが級ごとに紹介されてますぅ。英雄級では一門の使命を果たしたり名誉を回復する方向性ですぅが、伝説級ではティアマトを崇める赤い手との対決や後継者探し、神話級になると帝国の再興や再びバハムートとティアマトをひとつに戻しイオを復活させるところにまで行っているですぅ。
そして巻末にはケンイシカワライクに顔の半分や翼がエネルギー体になって、抵抗や完全耐性を無視するドラゴン・ブレスを吐き、死んでもセーヴに成功したら回復力使って戻ってくるAvatar of Ioという神話の運命が掲載されてるですぅ。
ところどころにあるコラムもドラゴンボーンの命名法、名誉とする行い(約束は守れ。重い誓いは汝の命に勝る。正直に話し、むやみに約束することなかれ。)、ドラゴンボーンの慣用句と意味(竜語発音つき)(「我が一門と名誉に賭けて」:最も厳格な誓いの意)など、ツボを押さえた内容なのでそういうところを補完したい人にもお勧めですぅ。
