これ以降はベルギー、ポーランド、ロシア、ドイツをはじめとした欧州各地を歴訪して騒動を巻き起こすカリオストロの活躍が描かれていくけれど、このあたりは当時の情勢についてある程度解説しつつ、なぜ人々がそこまで彼という怪人物にはまっていったかを描いているですぅ。
カリオストロ没落の引鉄となる王妃の頸飾り事件では、彼本人よりも彼最大のパトロンだったロアン枢機卿とラ・モット夫人やその周辺で事件を画策していた詐欺師たちの活動を主に描いて宮廷内の権力争いや王権の衰えを描いているですぅ。そして、バスチーユから釈放されるカリオストロの姿を革命への気運と重ね合わせながらも、流転の中で神秘の世界からも必要とされなくなった彼の没落と逮捕、その死で物語はまとめられてますぅ。
著者は十八世紀末に訪れていた王権の衰微と、そこかしこで勃興していた神秘結社を次の時代に花開く啓蒙主義の苗床として対置し、その二極の間を渡り歩きながらも本人自身はからっぽで何も持たず、彼を覗き込んだ人物の願望を映す鏡、まさに本人が言うところの“高貴なる旅人”としてカリオストロの二面性を描写していたけど、こうすることで内容に一本筋が通り、読みやすくなっている印象を持ちましたぁ。
