十字軍時代に設立されたテンプル騎士団、聖ヨハネ騎士団などの騎士修道会について解説した本ですぅ。戦史だけでなく金融や荘園、病院経営などの経済活動と、それから派生して中世の大開墾時代で騎士団が果たした役割などにも触れられてますぅ。騎士団の活動を通して時代性を俯瞰するような記述なので、そこから興味を広げるためのとっかかりになる良い本だと思うですぅ。

主人公が私に重なるところがあると薦められ読んでみたですぅ。種の衰退に抗う時期も終わったというのは、老年期の終りを思い浮かべたですぅが、老人の隣人が違うせいもあってかずいぶんとのんびりした老年期の風景スケッチになってるですぅ。
