この日はかなりアリアリな環境で作られたクリーチ……もとい新PCによるキャンペーンの開幕セッションだったですぅ。
サーシャは、真の名に関する資料を求めてヤゼインの霊智評議会を訪れていた。何度か文を交わした研究者のイーリという人物に逢い、資料の紹介をしてもらうという簡単な用事の遠出である。その傍らには、一年ほど前に遺跡で発掘したイーグルオウルを連れている。しかし、ヤゼインの閑静な通りに建つ塔の前では、数人の職員が慌ただしく走り回っていた。彼らのひとりを捕まえてイーリのことを訊くと、帰ってきたのは意外な答えだった。
霊智評議会に所属するイルダーナフは、レアレス王国随一の港街であるヤゼインを訪れていた。数百年前、会の創設に尽力したが謎の失踪を遂げたハビール老師の情報を掴んだという情報が入ったからである。永生者である彼は、長いこと進展が無い案件を任されることが多い。しかし、目的の支部を訪れると、門前で客らしき者たちと職員が困った様子で話し込んでいた。
ヤゼインの大学で若くして教鞭を執るイーリの呑み友達であるリリシアは、豪商や貴族が住む島手の宿で使用人に起こされた。家族の仇である海賊を皆殺しにした日の夢を見ていたために少々殺気立っていたが、使用人に対してはおくびにも出さず、彼が持ってきた霊智評議会からの手紙とやらを開封する。そこには、「火急の用事あり、ご足労されたし」という文章が支部長の書名入りで書かれ、はしけ代の小銭が同封されていた。
4人が揃うと、彼らは支部長から人払いされた会議室に通され、内々の話としてイーリが現在置かれているらしい状況を聞いた。それによると彼女は昨日大学からの帰り、暴漢に襲われて拉致されたという。学生や教授を中心とした文化人に人気が高く、最近レアレス王国で台頭している純血派を公然と批判していた移民である彼女の立場からして、純血派の過激組織に狙われたとしても無理はない。藪をつついて蛇を出したくないらしい衛視も信用できないため、4人は支部長からイーリの探索をひとり2000gpで依頼された。
事件の背後事情を追うと、それなりに支持者がいるイーリを狙うと自らの立場を危うくしかねないという考えが純血派の組織間でも主流であると判明し、そこに絞って調べた結果“物言わぬ手”という組織が浮かび上がった。島手に住む資産家、ストラチオ・エインスが実践的な貧民救済活動を行うために立ち上げた組織だが、彼に取り入ったガレスという幹部がごろつきの仲間を集め、貧民街を牛耳る地回りの集団に変質させてしまったらしい。最近では純血派の思想を“教育”すると言って誘拐まがいの活動を行っていたともいう。
イーリの金銭面を調べたところ収入のほとんどは資料収集に費やされており、それは偶に酒をおごるリリシアの経験からも明らかだった。そもそも強請りの対象として適切では無さそうだったが、4人はとりあえず彼らの本部へ向かうことにした。
“物言わぬ手”の本部は貧民街の安酒場を改装した酒場だった。戸は閉ざされているが明かりは漏れているため、イーグルオウルが聞き耳を立てると、建物の中にいる者たちはガレスが死んだことに戸惑っている様子だった。そして、イーグルオウルは建物の中を窺う自分たちを斜向かいの部屋から見ている者がいると気づく。新手を呼ばれるのは迷惑だということで、イーグルオウルとリリシアが看視者を黙らせにいくことになり、イルダーナフとサーシャは路地裏に隠れた。
部屋の前にたったイーグルオウルはおもむろに扉を叩き、住人を呼び出す。もちろん、横ではリリシアが鯉口を切っている。
「ガレスさンにお届けものでス」
「そんなのうちにゃあ居ないよ」
「ガレスさンはいらっしゃいますカ」
「居ないつってんだろ」
「埒があきませン。壊しましょウ」
そう呟くと、イーグルオウルは一撃必殺で安物の扉を粉砕。部屋の中へ飛び散るおが屑の中をリリシアが寝台でうつ伏せになって窓の外を窺っていた男まで間合いを詰め、枕の下に伸びようとする手を牽制して首筋にカタナを当てる。
「貴様、“物言わぬ手”の者だな」
「いや違いますっていうかあんたたちこそなんなんだよ」
〈真意看破〉したリリシアには男が到底嘘を言っているようには見えなかったが、わめく男を峰討ちで黙らせる。
爆音を聞いて様子を窺いにきた隣室の住人が人殺しとわめいて逃げ出すにあたって、これ以上部屋にいるのは良くないと悟ったふたりは窓から合図。イルダーナフがサイレンスを発動させたところでイーグルオウルが住人をつまみ、窓ごと壁を破壊して脱出。路地裏に逃げ込んだところでサーシャが入れ代わり、《Summon Elemental》でミディアム・ウォーター・エレメンタルを召喚して「去れい化け物！」と〈はったり〉を利かせ、騒ぎを聞いている人々を煙に巻き、その場を離れた。
様子を窺っていた男の尋問と時間潰しを兼ね、一行は適当な宿に入ると主人に小銭を握らせて部屋を確保し、リリシアがドミネート・モンスターで男と親しくなる。自分たちはヤゼインの平和を影から護るために戦う組織の者で、口外すると身に危険が及ぶとサーシャが〈はったり〉を利かせて男を尋問する。それによると、昨日顔を頭巾で隠した人物が金を先渡しし、しばらく“物言わぬ手”を見張るよう依頼されたらしい。それ以上のことは判明しなかったので男に部屋の修繕費を渡し、しばらく酔い覚ましの散歩をして帰るように言いつける。
こうして時間を潰した一行は“物言わぬ手”本部へ乗り込むことになった。しかし、さきほど騒いだせいか扉の前には警備が立っている。そこへサーシャがふらりと現れ、
「こんな夜更けに何をやってるんだい？」
「さっきの騒ぎを知らねえのか。化け物が出たらしいぜ」
「ほおう。ところでその化け物は」
こんなだったかい？ と、再び《Summon Elemental》でエレメンタルを召喚すると、男は悲鳴を上げて逃げ出すが、リリシアが割って入るとハーフ・ヴァンパイアの能力、ドミネート・モンスターを使い、化け物が化け物がとわめく男に、
「あれは凶悪な化け物だ。私が倒すから待っていたまえ」
そう言って路地裏に逃げ込ませ、その間に扉を蹴破って制圧した。
ドミネート・モンスターで“物言わぬ手”の構成員から話を聞いたところ、ガレスは胡乱な連中とも関わりがあり、彼らの仕事を下請けして小遣いを稼いだりしていたらしい。彼は昨日もそういう酒場で飲んでいたはずで、死体は鋭い刃物で滅多斬りにされ、尋常な殺され方ではなかったとていう。このあたりで再びの騒ぎが通報されたらしく警邏中の衛視がやってくるが、友達になった構成員に応対させて尋問は続き、核心へ迫る。イーリを攫ったのもガレスの指示で、その後は地下の酒蔵に閉じ込めているらしい。
それを聞いた一行はイーリが閉じ込められた酒蔵へ向かったが、中には人っ子ひとりいない。ガレスの部下に聞いても何があったか解らないらしいが、イーグルオウルが調べると隠し扉があり、下水道に続いていることが判明する。それを辿ると、壁が侵入者を押しつぶす罠があり、奥にはエティン・スケルトンが配置されていた。それをいなして先に進むと、地上への出口があった。
地上へ出ると、怪しい人影が一行の周囲を囲む。アセイミーことウィッチナイフの凶手である。腕に漆黒の帆布を巻き、手に手にカマを持った彼らは攻撃を当てると共に《Scorpion's Grasp》(Dungeon Magazine #120)で組みつき、もうひとりが《魔道師退治》で防御的発動を潰しにかかる。イルダーナフとサーシャが組みつきからの連打で追い詰められるが、《組みつき迎撃》で組みつきをかわし、緑色に輝くスターメタル製バトルフィストで凶手の胴体を文字通り粉砕するイーグルオウルと、ハーフ・ヴァンパイアのダメージ軽減で隙を見せずに《大旋風》で敵を掃討するリリシアがじりじりと戦局を好転させ、イルダーナフがhpがひと桁になりつつも組みつきから開放されて下水に落ちて敵からの追撃をかわす一幕などがあったが、刺客たちを撃退した。
親の仇が駆っていた船と同じ漆黒の帆布を身に付けていたことによる殺意を抑えながらリリシアが生け捕りにしたウィッチナイフをドミネート・モンスターしたところ、彼は“黒帆衆”という刺士の集団で、魔教の業を窮めた男が頭であるらしい。心当たりがあったのか、リリシアが口を開く。
